HEATHER MILLS HONOURED IN NEW YORK CITY DONATES $1 MILLION TO CHILDREN’S GROUP FOR HEALTHY FOOD More than 1,000 children gathered in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx on Saturday, 20 September, where Heather Mills received a U.S. Certificate of Congressional Merit for her charity work and for helping to promote healthy living. Heather is donating $1 million – enough for more than 370,000 "meatless meat" meals – to the Hunts Point Alliance for Children, which she serves as Honorary Chairwoman. Congressman Jose Serrano presented her with the Congressional award. These pictures show Heather during an afternoon Bar-B-Que that featured “meatless” burgers and chicken, and also receiving the award from Congressman Serrano. The "Back to School Fair" also included medical screenings and distribution of books and school supplies.
"These children live in the shadows of the biggest food distribution point in the Northeast, yet so many of them will grow up disadvantaged because of poor health," Heather said. "I want to show them that they, like me, can overcome any obstacles in their way. And that fight begins with nutrition and healthy living." Heather learnt about a plant-based diet 16 years ago after being hit by a police motorbike and losing her leg. During her hospital stay, a friend suggested her wounds would heal more quickly if she adopted the plant-based diet – so Heather checked herself out of the hospital and learnt first-hand the difference healthy eating can make. The recent event in the Bronx received worldwide news coverage. To follow the latest news on Heather & the Hunts Point Alliance, click here. For more information please visit Hunts Point. |

While the Hunts Point neighbourhood of the Bronx is the food distribution centre for 30 million people, the neighbourhood has the city's worst rates of obesity and one third of the children there suffer from environmentally-related asthma (in part due to the industrial pollution of the Hunts Point markets).
