Heather Skates into the history books!
Heather Mills together with her Skate partner Matt Evers has shown the world how living with disability can be overcome with hard work and determination. Heather stated on an interview this morning on ITV's GMTV that "She is determined to carry on her work with Matt to illustrate there are no boundaries in this life and that anything is possible with the right mind set". She also discussed a TV project that would involve looking at disability from a different prospective. Matt added his admiration and revealed "as far as I know, only one other skater in the world has come anywhere near what Heather has achieved. I am just so proud of her".
Heather is happy with her 5th week exit from the show and has always thanked the public for keeping her in the hit ITV 1 show. "I have been overwhelmed with the letters of support and messages from the general public. Emails and calls from fellow amputees about how they have been inspired to take up skating or any new sport has been the greatest gift that this show has given us. This is just the beginning".
Heather recently began work with charity, Physicians for Peace, in a bid to help amputees of the recent Haiti earthquake. Heather is collecting false arms and legs to send to the survivors of the disaster who may have suffered lost limbs. Physicians for Peace founded in 1989, are dedicated to the ideal that health care in the developing world can best be improved by providing training and education to health care professionals in those countries.
Being an amputee herself, Heather is keen to help improve the quality of treatment and care for the recent victims. She is providing them with information, support and limbs.
The teams will be collecting limbs at local prosthetic clinics, so please pop in to your local clinic for donations. You can also take any limbs, crutches or equipment to Heather's VBites café in hove and they will be processed and sent to those who need them most.
For more information please visit www.physiciansforpeace.org.
Dorset Orthopaedic make all of Heather's limbs, click here to find out about the new Dancing on Ice skating limb.
:: UPDATE ::
As much as I'm missing Dancing on Ice already, I must say I'm enjoying the rest.
It was such a challenge to compete in this show but one that was so worth the effort.
You know how much better your weekends are when you've been working hard all week, on that tip I am so going to savour every little moment of my holiday in the sunshine and there will be no ice where I'm going I promise you, except on the TV on Sunday of course, when I'll be tuning in to see how the rest of the guys are getting on.
I really am going to miss Dancing on ice. I absolutely loved taking part. It's such a great show and I hope it comes across on the TV how great everyone gets on behind the scenes. Ice Dancing is such a challenge as anyone who's had a go can testify, before this show I tried to stand on the ice, but my leg did not allow me. When you add a bit of hip wiggling, spins and turns into the equation it is all too easy to end up squarely on your bum.
That everyone improves so quickly and manages to stay upright on the night is testament to the excellent training we all receive but also to the camaraderie of our fellow contestants. We all know how difficult it is to learn a new routine each week and then actually manage to stay upright and in one piece. We all willed each other on to do well and I'm going to miss the warmth of those guys.
Ice Skating is not easy, but we all got such great support and training from the team. I remember watching Bolero in awe at the Olympics all those years ago when Torvill and Dean were pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved on ice. It was an honour and a pleasure (all be it a painful one at times) to take part and be coached by the best.
I wish everyone left in the competition the best of luck; I'm really looking forward to the new routines and watching how much they all improve from here. All the contestants are pushed to be the best they can be so even the best skaters are pushed to the edge of their abilities, which will keep the show exciting and fresh right to the very end.
I'll certainly be taking a few painful souvenirs from Dancing on Ice away with me on my holiday. As I lie on my sun bed, chilling out, reading, watching my bruises slowly change colour and then finally disappear, I will be reminiscing about Mikey's plea to borrow one of my legs as he staggered exhaustingly of the ice after one of his rehearsals. It will be with a sense of satisfaction that I did the best that I could and with some very fond memories and happy thoughts at the fun I have had and the new friends I have made.
Good luck to the rest of the guys your doing yourself proud. I would like to specially mention Matt Evers my skating partner for basically being such a great bloke, talented skater and coach. It was your sensitive understanding and approach that made it possible for us to get as far as we did without breaking my neck. You're a darling.
Thank you for everyone that voted for me and has given me their support it is worth more to me than you'll ever know.
xxxxxx
