Viva!
Ducks out of Water
Our undercover teams shocked consumers with depressing footage of filthy, diseased, dead and dying ducks at units belonging to all the leading UK producers. We revealed for the first time that almost all ducks are factory farmed - beautiful aquatic birds in squalid sheds in their thousands and all denied access to water except to drink. Viva! ended the brutal practice of ‘debeaking’ – where the ends of ducks’ bills are painfully amputated without anaesthetic in an attempt to control the damage caused by aggression. Harrods and M&S dumped factory-farmed ducks. Nationwide press and TV coverage was followed by a drop in duck sales of two million and the decline has continued.

A similar campaign in the US by Viva! led to the national supermarket chain Whole Foods Markets rejecting all factory-farmed duck and it rewrote all its animal welfare codes, making them the best in the world. The company’s CEO, John Mackie, became vegan and acknowledged Viva!’s role in his decision. Viva! USA was also credited with helping to get the State of California (the world’s fifth largest economy) to reject
the production and sale of all foie gras. It has also fought an exhausting campaign to retain a legal ban on the sale of all kangaroo products in California. Adidas, who sell kangaroo skin boots, has thrown its phenomenal weight against us but even there most well known promoter, David Beckham, has rejected kangaroo boots for synthetic.
