Viva!

Hey meaty you're making me hot! Part 2

Viva! launched its national HOT! campaign to help save the environment in London in November 2007. Its central theme is that the most effective action individuals can take to reduce global warming and other environmental catastrophes is to change their diet - move away from meat, dairy and other animal products and move towards a plant-based diet.

Launching the HOT! campaign was Heather Mills, patron of Viva!, who also features in two leaflets and two billboard ads. One concentrates on meat-eaters' role in causing global warming and carries the headline: "Hey Meaty, you're making me so hot!" Another is aimed at people and organisations who call themselves environmentalists but still eat meat, fish and dairy. It has the headline: "You haven't got a leg to stand on!"

The statistics underlining this campaign are drawn from the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organisation 2006 report, Livestock's Long Shadow, and Viva!'s own report, Diet of Disaster.

They establish that livestock are the second biggest cause of greenhouse gases at 18 per cent, compared to 13.5 per cent from all the world's different modes of transport combined. They are the major cause of both species extinctions and the felling of tropical forests. 70 per cent of the cleared Amazon is used for grazing and the other 30 per cent for growing animal fodder, with Europe as the biggest importer.

The startling truth is that animals farmed for meat and dairy are now one of the greatest threats to the planet. They are at the heart of almost all the world's environmental catastrophes. Go vegan with Viva! and you’ll make a huge difference to saving our world.
Heather Mills.

Health Matters

The science is now overwhelming - vegetarians and vegans are healthier than meat eaters and are likely to live longer. See why Heather is a Patron of Viva!’s sister health charity, the Vegetarian & Vegan Foundation:

Almost all the modern, degenerative diseases – diseases of affluence – are largely triggered by meat and dairy and the saturated fat, cholesterol and animal protein they contain. Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and so on are at epidemic proportions and increasing yet the food industry continues aggressively to promote animal products and the Government continues to subsidise them. Our children are the principle victims and this unholy alliance is quite literally threatening their future.

Act Up

Politicians seem unwilling or incapable of taking any meaningful action on any of these accelerating problems – possibly because they’re committed to market forces, because their tenure is short and they’re doing quite nicely thank you out of the status quo. But you can act right now.

Heather says: The simple decision to stop eating animal products immediately reduces your impact on the globe and dramatically cuts your part in the cruelty and destruction. By supporting Viva! you are part of the fight back against cynicism, self interest and cruelty. It is a fight for life!
