Dying for Meat

Viva!’s commitment to changing people’s diets would be entirely vindicated if the only reason was to end animal abuse. But there is much, much more to it than that.

The shocking truth is that millions of people in the developing world – children in particular – die from starvation alongside fields of high-quality food destined for the West’s farmed animals. As huge agribusiness spreads the contagion of factory farming across the globe and the demand on the fodder on which to feed them, the position of the powerless becomes ever more fragile and their struggle to survive more acute. Uncomfortable as it is to face, meat eating is a significant cause of starvation.

Heather in front of Banner

I could never go back to eating meat, fish or dairy. The effect that our diet has on the rest of the world was brought home to me by an African woman at the Live Eight concert. She explained that in her home country children starved alongside fields filled with lush crops destined to be exported to Europe to be eaten by farmed animals. Viva! then joined up all the dots by explaining how livestock production is destroying the environment and the effect that dairy produce has on human health. Essentially it ain’t healthy – for us or the planet!
