Three Christmases running, Viva!’s undercover teams exposed the appalling conditions inside the sheds of Britain’s leading turkey producer, Bernard Matthews. Squalor and overcrowding is the order of the day as thousands of birds mill around in sheds where not a chink of daylight penetrates. Again, major TV and press coverage was followed by a drop in turkey sales.

I was shocked by Viva!s footage of Bernard Matthews turkeys. From one end of the shed to the other we could see nothing but a sea of dirty, bedraggled birds, so crammed in there was barely room for them to move. It’s ironic that some people celebrate Christmas by eating the bodies of these poor creatures.
