Cat & Dog Fur Ban
28th January 2004
Government Commitment to Ban Trade
A report to parliament on the 28th January 2004 by Ian Pearson MP, the Minister of State for Trade Investment & Foreign Affairs confirmed the Government's previous commitment to ban the trade when positive proof was found in the UK.
Respect for Animals, driven by this guaranteed incentive, maximized their efforts to find this much needed evidence. The greater goal however that still needed to be achieved was to get the full EU ban on this brutal trade so this illicit fur could not circulate from country to country to country. Of particular concern was the increase in fur reaching the EU from new members of the European Union situated near to the Russian border. Russia is one of the three main locations for the Chinese exports of these pelts and furs. The US sales of course had already been shut down but with Russia so close to some of the new EU member states it would not be surprising to see the fur being re-circulated from Russia.
