India

Friday, March 16th

Today we visited the last town on our itinerary. Chitrod was 70 per cent damaged. Here I met a 26-year-old woman, Retna, who had a six-month-old baby called Afsan. I stood in the doorway of her devastated house talking to a couple of her elderly relatives. They keep a cow in the house now, because it isn't fit for people to live in any more. The lines on their faces spoke of what they had gone through. They said that the worst thing was that they, the old ones, were alive, while the younger members of their family had died. They wished it had been them.

Heather MillsI've decided to launch an appeal when I get back to England. I've meet some wonderful people here, victims and volunteers, and it made me realise how strong the urge to help people is when a disaster happens.

We can't all go out to India, but there are other ways and one of them is to buy limbs for the leg -fitting day. The more limbs we can buy, the more people we can make walk again. People in England can make a real difference by buying a Jaipur leg. For just £20 they will be able to make a child walk again. Imagine that. If you do nothing else, for charity for the rest of your life, what a worthwhile thing to do!
